Green Schools, five years together
At present, Karamoja is one of the less developed areas in Uganda and one of the poorest at a global level, right now struggling for hunger after three seasons of harvest below the average since 2012.
Access to water is one of the principal problems of Karamoja. The report on development from the PM’s office for the period 2011-2015 shows that 73% of the population needs a minimum of 30 minutes to reach a water source. For those having access to water protection from contamination is a serious problem, in particular with regards to gathering of, transport, and conservation.
In some parts of Karamoja, in particular in Moroto, the alphabetisation rate is as low as 13%. According to figures available for Moroto, the number of children of school age is 24.277 but only 7.195 result as registered at schools, and of these only 5.244 regularly attend school (just 30% of the total). The introduction of children to school is complex for many reasons; the feeding problems and the nomadic nature of the people in Karimojong means that the presence of the children is indispensable for the sustainability of the community.
To support in a concrete and efficient manner four primary schools, two situated in Napak and two in Moroto, promoting access to primary education through better dietary and sanitary conditions in the schools themselves. Also the project intends to follow on from the pilot project annually, updating the greenhouse previously installed at the ISP Moroto compound. The objective is to verify the potential of this agricultural support in a new context. The profit made from the sale of vegetables produced in the greenhouse will be used to cover ther management costs.
