Green schools, the third!

Karamoja is one of the poorest regions in Uganda, and between the poorest in Africa. It confines to the Nord with South Sudan, to the East with Kenya and to West with Congo. The climate is typically dry and hot, with strong winds and one only rain season from April to September.

THE SITUATION
population: 900.000 people live in in villages called “eré”. They live of seminomadic pasture of cows and goats. The animals are a measure of richness and a mean of exchange. In 2003 the percentage of malnutrition cases declared by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with UNICEF and WFP, has been at a peak of 26,9%. In the district of Moroto, where this project takes place, the analphabetism percentage is of 13%. 80% of children going to school, are leaving before they fulfill the study title. 

Rain irregularity is one of the main reasons why agriculture is not the main resource of earnings. Live is based on very damaging actions for the environment: coal production, fire wood production, brick burning, hunting…
Water is the main problem, most of the families collect an average of 2 recipients a day, 60% under the minimum standard of 15 liters per person per day. The average distance between the water source and the home is of 1,5km, waiting time to fill the recipients about 6 hours. 
Only 6% of the children under 15 years have ended successfully the primary school. 92% of Karimojong children have not had any kind of education. Only 11% of the children are going to school. The presence of food in the schools is very important, as schools are a fundamental resource of food for children, who otherwise have no access to anything save to eat. 
Agriculture is at an elementary level, overall practiced by women. The luck of know-how about the land use has brought to a severe environmental degradation: deforestation, fertility loss, ground erosion.

GOAL:
We are aiming to promote access to education, while improving alimentary, sanitary and structural conditions in the schools of Karamoja. We promote the rational use of the limited natural resources, as well as extending notions of environmental preservation.

BENEFICIARIES:
The number of direct beneficiaries is of 1.279 individuals (1.228 students, 51 teachers).
The number of indirect beneficiaries, counting 5 persons per family, is of 6.359 individuals.

SECTOR OF ACTION:
agriculture: we will purchase seeds (mays, cow peas, sunflower, peas, peanuts, tomato, cabbage, aubergine, onions, sukumawiki, peppers, amaranth, carrots) and tools (mattock,  reaping hooks, machete, pick, paddle, ewer, barrow), which will be distributed as “agricultural kits” to the beneficiaries, who are previously identified by the local staff.
Moreover the farmers will be participating to the annual sustainable agricultural class, held by ISP…in Africa.

water: we will restore the rain water collecting system at the Kaloi primary school, reactivating the already existing undersoil-tank, connecting it to the main water collecting system already present. In Kautakou primary school we will install a solar water pump on an already existing water well, which at the present is not working. 
These actions will give the possibility to eliminate dissipations. Further on, our final goal will be to equip every school with a solar water pump.

education: we will hold theory and practice classes to the students and teachers, with attention to “environment and threes”, giving the importance to environmental conservation and sensibilizing on the theme of pollution and exploitation of natural resources, encouraging to the conservation of the natural environment. Moreover we will speak about “agro-forestation and ground composition”, in specific about the agro-forestation technics and the reduction of fire-wood consumption.
With the teachers we will integrate the thematic of  “life fences” to protect the harvest and the cultivation of fire-wood and fruit threes.
At the end of the classes a small three plant will be distributed. 
The classes are a very important part of the project, as it’s thanks to technical know-how that a sustainable agriculture is possible, towards an environment protection.

Sustainability and energy saving: we will build a new kitchen in the two schools of Kaloi and Kautakou, installing an energy saving oven in both of them. These stows permit an energy saving of up to 75% on fire-wood, and therefore help to fight deforestation.

The total budget for the project is of 34.493 €. ISP… in Africa will be participating to the project with a contribution of 10.050 €.
