In the arid heart of Karamoja, where livestock conflicts and poverty are a sad reality, the Costa Family Foundation and ISP's ‘Bees and Honey’ project has brought a breath of hope. This initiative has transformed the lives of local communities by promoting beekeeping as a sustainable and profitable alternative.

Bees and Honey in Karamoja: A Sweet Opportunity for Sustainable Development

The Costa Family Foundation and Insieme si può... (ISP) are pleased to share the results of the "Bees and Honey in Karamoja" project, an initiative that aims to promote environmental sustainability and human development in a region of Uganda facing significant challenges. In a context characterized by a worrying increase in inter-ethnic conflicts and violent clashes over livestock ownership, on which the Karimojong people almost exclusively depend, the project proposed beekeeping as a new and profitable livelihood alternative.

A Critical Context Demands Innovative Solutions

In recent months, Karamoja has been a theater of growing instability, with slowdowns in economic and social development. The local population's almost total reliance on livestock, coupled with increasing resource scarcity, has made the situation unsustainable. It's in this scenario that the "Bees and Honey" project emerged as an innovative solution, leveraging the high commercial potential and quality of honey produced in Karamoja, renowned for its absence of pesticides and pollutants.

The strategy behind the project was to train local ISP staff in beekeeping, beehive management, and honey production. The goal was for this knowledge and these skills to then be passed on to various groups in Karimojong villages and communities, ensuring a long-term impact and widespread adoption of the new practices.

Activities Carried Out: From Training to Harvest

The first phase of the project involved an analysis and evaluation of existing skills and materials, paving the way for the next phase: an intensive 4-day training. During this period, ISP staff gained technical, theoretical, and practical skills, working alongside 'Clide Consultancy,' a local organization specializing in livestock farming and integrated development.

Once trained on bee life, their behavior, beehive and apiary management, honey collection, and production processes, ISP staff assisted Clide in training and mentoring additional beneficiaries. The recipients of these training sessions included:

  • 10 HIV-positive women and men assisted by Choose Life Home Based Care.
  • 12 members of the TIDO association.
  • 20 farmers (13 women and 7 men) from remote areas on the outskirts of Moroto.

Key training topics covered:

  • Life and types of bees, and their organization within a beehive.
  • Different types of beehives.
  • Variety and correct use of necessary beekeeping tools.
  • Creation and maintenance of an apiary and beehive placement.
  • Beehive inspection and honey harvesting.
  • Honey filtering, quality control, and production processes.

In the months following the training, ISP, in collaboration with Clide and local partners, continued to monitor and support beneficiaries with periodic follow-up visits and mentorship.

Difficulties Encountered and Solutions Adopted

The main difficulty encountered by the various beneficiary groups was choosing the right location for placing beehives and organizing each apiary. Thanks to Clide's expert guidance, initial errors were corrected, and the proper placement and arrangement of each beehive were found. The necessity of placing beehives on specially produced metal stands by technical staff was also identified. These stands facilitate the monitoring of the beehives' condition and prevent other insects or animals from approaching them, ensuring greater safety and hygiene.

Results Achieved: A Sweeter Future for Karamoja

The results achieved through the activities carried out as part of this project are particularly significant:

  • Local ISP staff now correctly manage an apiary of 10 beehives near their compound, 6 of which have been colonized. Among these, one beehive has the ideal conditions for the start of honey harvesting.
  • Farmers from TIDO and those involved in the Choose Life Home Based Care project managed to sell 258 kg of raw honey collected from their beehives to ISP. This honey was then processed and filtered in ISP's laboratory.
  • In total, 198 kg of pure honey were obtained, a sought-after and high-quality product that was sold both in Karamoja and Kampala.

Therefore, given the results obtained by the different beneficiary groups, the project can be considered successful in imparting new skills and competencies to various Karimojong communities, offering them new tools for self-sufficiency that are not only economically profitable but also environmentally sustainable.

The "Bees and Honey in Karamoja" project is a clear example of how innovation and training can open new opportunities, transforming challenges into successes and building a sweeter, more sustainable future for local communities.
