Water wells for schools in Karamoja
Repair and rehabilitation of 22 wells and rainwater harvesting systems in 9 schools in Karamoja in 2024
In 2024, we marked an important milestone for the Karamoja community, one of Uganda’s most vulnerable regions. With the support of valued partners such as Insieme si può… in Africa (ISP) and the generosity of STI International and the Costa Family Foundation, we completed a crucial initiative to provide thousands of people with access to clean and safe water.
The Objectives: Access, Health, and Sustainability
The project had two main goals:
- To repair and rehabilitate critical wells for community water supply.
- To improve rainwater harvesting systems in schools, increasing storage capacity and addressing the effects of drought.
Through an integrated and targeted approach, we not only met these goals but exceeded them.
The Results: Numbers That Tell the Story of Success
- 22 repaired wells: Including 14 community wells, 7 school wells, and 1 located at a health center. These now provide clean water to 42,602 people.
- 9 renovated rainwater harvesting systems in primary and secondary schools: Increasing water storage capacity from 55,000 to 143,000 liters, benefiting 8,458 students and staff.
In total, more than 51,000 beneficiaries gained direct access to clean water, an essential resource for health, education, and food security.
Making a Tangible Impact on the Community
The restored and available water has brought immediate and life-changing benefits. Wells now provide water for drinking, cooking, washing, farming, and livestock care, reducing reliance on contaminated sources and lowering the risks of waterborne diseases.
In schools, the increased capacity for rainwater collection has minimized disruptions to lessons caused by water shortages. Students and teachers can now focus on education, knowing their basic needs are met.
Local Involvement: A Key to Sustainability
The active participation of communities was vital to the project’s success. Residents contributed labor, strengthening their sense of ownership and responsibility toward the renewed infrastructure. Additionally, technicians and volunteers were trained to maintain the repaired systems, ensuring long-term benefits.
Looking Ahead
This project proves that with targeted interventions, strong collaborations, and a shared vision, we can create profound and sustainable impacts. It is a testament to the importance of investing in fundamental resources to improve the wellbeing of the most vulnerable communities.
We are proud to have contributed to this mission and grateful to everyone who made this achievement possible. But our commitment doesn’t end here: we will continue working to ensure that everyone, everywhere, has access to what is a fundamental right—clean water.
