Who they are

Since 2020, Silvia Marcolin, a volunteer from Treviso, has been living in the Mukono district of Uganda, alongside those who are most vulnerable and most alone. Around her, Effatà Charity Organisation was born — registered both in Uganda and in Italy as a ODV — with a simple and direct approach: genuine relationships, first names, daily presence.

Effatà today supports hundreds of children and families through school sponsorships, house construction, land and livestock purchases, and medical assistance for those with disabilities or serious conditions.

The project

At the heart of everything is the Casa Famiglia: a structured place where women and children in vulnerable situations can be welcomed and build paths toward autonomy. Not just rooms and shared spaces — also workshops to learn a trade, accommodation for volunteers, a medical room.

And above all, a farm. In 2022 Effatà purchased one hectare of land: plantations of matoke, soy, cassava, fruit, and farmyard animals. The land feeds the Casa and generates income through the sale of surplus. The Casa will not be a closed island: it will be open to the village, to the children of the community, to local craftspeople who share their skills.

The goal is self-sustainability. A home that lives with the community, not despite it.

How our support works

Casa Costa Foundation ETS accompanies Casa Famiglia Effatà over time, contributing to concrete expenses when they arise: small things, but real ones. Not a project grant, but a presence — that of someone who believes in what is being built and chooses to be there.

Why we do it

Dignity is not given — it is built. A home is not just a roof: it is the starting point that allows someone to learn, to work, to take care of themselves and others.

It is the same conviction that guides everything Casa Costa Foundation does. And when we found it in what Effatà is building in Mukono, we recognised something familiar.
