The choices that change things rarely make noise
Not speeches, not marches. Small gestures, almost invisible — a signature, a tax code written in a box that few people notice. Yet they accumulate. And over time, they build the world we live in.
There's a mechanism that works every year, in silence, while most people are thinking about something else. It's called 5×1000. It's a portion of the Italian income tax that the State doesn't keep for itself but redistributes to third sector organisations — associations, foundations, social cooperatives. It costs you nothing extra: that money is withheld either way. The only thing that changes is where it ends up.
Those who choose, choose. Those who don't, let the system choose for them.
And the system has a precise logic: it takes the share of those who expressed no preference and redistributes it proportionally to those who have already received the most. It doesn't reward merit, it doesn't consider need. It follows the crowd. The result is that every year, silently, the large grow larger — not because anyone chose them, but because no one chose someone else.
Large organisations often do excellent work. They have structure, expertise, the capacity to scale. Not the point.
The point is that the extra funds they receive through this effect were wanted by no one. They were simply there, waiting. And they went where everything unaddressed goes: toward those who had already raised their hand.
Small organisations don't raise their hand. They have no press offices, no digital campaigns, no one dedicated solely to fundraising. They have people — often few — who do the work and then look for a way to keep doing it.
For them, a few thousand euros is not symbolic. It's a project that starts instead of waiting. It's a person supported instead of left alone. It's a community that holds together instead of quietly emptying out, before anyone notices quickly enough.
We are one of these organisations. A small Foundation, a seed regenerating territories and communities, with roots that reach as far as Uganda, Ethiopia, Afghanistan. We have no campaigns. We have people — few, attentive — who try to do things well, even when no one is watching. And we have one certainty we hold as our compass: every euro that comes in, goes out. To those who need it, as directly as possible.
So yes: we're asking you to choose us. But only if you know us. Only if you've seen how we work, if something we do has convinced you, if you feel an affinity between what you believe in and what we do. Not out of sympathy, not out of inertia. Out of conscious choice.

Not much more is needed. It's a small gesture, almost invisible.
