Amakapé: a question of hope

Nun Patrizia and Nun Maristella have been trying to give new hope to this village for five years now. One step at a time, acting instead of talking, by building something.

Amakpapé is the name of a village in Togo with 12,000 souls. In the Ewè language it means ‘House of leaves’. A beautiful name which conjures up ‘green’. Green equals nature and hope. In this village, nature and hope go hand in hand. However, verdant, lush nature doesn’t always equal a chance of life, especially for the children representing half the population living in dire conditions.

These children carry the weight of suffering and absence on their frail shoulders. Often orphans, with no access to education, nor a daily meal to eat. Children who have to face disease and untenable poverty and suffering.

Nun Patrizia and Nun Maristella have been trying to give new hope to this village for several years now. One step at a time, acting instead of talking, by building something. New hope which can be nurtured thanks to your help and support. They built a school and some game structures in the garden: this new attraction soon became a meeting point for countless children. The nuns pay the school tuition for the more needy children, and try to provide for their meals. They also manage the ‘hospital’ where they take numerous children and teenagers to receive treatment for infections, sores, malaria, abscesses, worms.
Hope needs constant nurturing if it is to become real. Hope which can grow stronger and allow the children to become men and women. For that hope to live on and become green once more, Nuns Patrizia and Maristella have created a fund to withdraw from every time they need to face certain expenses: school tuition, teacher salary, teaching material, health bills, and food.
Your contribution to this fund is of vital importance. It’s the only hope they have to continue what they’re doing. Whoever helps them will receive a summary of what is going on with the children in the village, their story, the economic benefits resulting from the help they’ve received.
And here’s a special invitation from the two great women: come and visit us here in Amakpapé to personally see what we’re doing thanks to your generosity!
