Light and Water for Green Schools
The project restored water and light in 15 schools in Karamoja, Uganda, ensuring sustainability to previous ‘Green Schools’ projects.
Light and Water for Green Schools: A Brighter Future in Karamoja
The Costa Family Foundation is proud to share the results of the "Light and Water for Green Schools" project, an initiative that has strengthened the infrastructure of 15 schools in Karamoja, Uganda. Collaborating with the "Insieme si può..." ONLUS-ONG Association (ISP), we've ensured that previous efforts to equip schools with water and electricity through the "Green Schools" projects are sustainable and functional.
The Objective: Supporting Education with Vital Resources
The primary goal of this project was the maintenance and repair of solar systems, photovoltaic plants, rainwater harvesting systems, and wells in at least 5 schools in the region. We wanted to ensure that schools continued to have access to fundamental resources like clean water and electricity, essential for a healthy and productive learning environment.
Extraordinary Results: 15 Schools Reached with a €10,000 Budget
Thanks to the exceptional efficiency and technical expertise of ISP's specialized staff, we far exceeded the initial objective. With a budget of €10,000, we intervened in 15 schools, tripling the projected impact. This was possible due to a significant reduction in external labor costs and the strategic purchase of materials. Much of the spare parts, such as gutters, were produced directly in ISP's workshops, and purchasing larger quantities allowed for more advantageous pricing.
Interventions Carried Out: Essential Details
The interventions were numerous and aimed at ensuring the restoration and full functionality of the water and electrical systems. Here's an overview of some of the work done:
- Replacement and repair of taps, valves, and connectors: Crucial for ensuring a constant water flow and preventing waste (e.g., Musupo P/S, Municipal P/S, Moroto Army P/S).
- Repair and replacement of gutters and tanks: Fundamental for optimizing rainwater harvesting, a precious resource in the region (e.g., Rupa P/S, Nawanatau P/S, Nakapelimen P/S).
- Maintenance and installation of solar panels and batteries: To ensure the necessary lighting and electricity in classrooms, dormitories, and offices (e.g., Nawanatau P/S, Child Jesus P/S, Nakapelimen P/S).
- Replacement of solar pumps for boreholes: Essential for extracting water from wells (e.g., Kakolye P/S, Kasimeri P/S, Lotome Girls P/S).
Every intervention was carried out with precision, guaranteeing lasting solutions for each school's needs.
An Investment in the Future of Communities
The "Light and Water for Green Schools" project is not just a technical intervention; it's a direct investment in the future of children and communities in Karamoja. Ensuring access to clean water sources and electricity means improving hygiene conditions, fostering a more stimulating and safe learning environment, and contributing to the overall growth of the region.
The Costa Family Foundation is proud to collaborate with partners like ISP, who, with their expertise and dedication, transform financial support into a tangible and significant impact. We will continue to work toward building a brighter future for the schools and communities of Karamoja.
