Giving hope back to widowed women and their children. What we managed to do with the ‘One Goat for One Afghan Woman’ Project in 2024.

A Goat for an Afghan Woman: Seeds of Hope and Self-Sufficiency

The Costa Family Foundation is proud to share the results of "A Goat for an Afghan Woman," an initiative that has brought concrete support to widowed and vulnerable women in the Balkh and Takhar provinces of Afghanistan. In collaboration with "Insieme si può..." (ISP) and implemented by the Social Association of Afghan Justice Seekers (SAAJS), this project demonstrates how targeted aid can generate a profound and lasting impact.

A Project with Clear and Measurable Objectives

The project's primary goal was the economic and social empowerment of the most in-need women and families. We set out to:

  • Economic Support: Enable families to generate income through the sale of goat products like milk, cheese, and offspring.
  • Social Empowerment: Foster the independence and autonomy of widowed women by enabling them to manage their own resources.
  • Food Security: Ensure continuous access to fresh milk, improving family nutrition and reducing reliance on external aid.

The Concrete Impact: Numbers and Voices of Change

Between January and November 2024, the project supported 15 families in the Balkh and Takhar provinces. Each family received 3 goats, for a total of 45 goats distributed. The choice of goats was not random: they are hardy animals, easy to care for, require low maintenance costs, and reproduce annually, offering a consistent and sustainable source of income.

The impact has manifested on multiple fronts:

  • Economic Benefits: Families now have a stable source of income from selling milk, cheese, and goat kids. A one-year-old goat kid can be sold for 14,000-15,000 AFN (approximately €200), a significant sum in these rural areas.
  • Social Empowerment: Widowed women, often with limited opportunities, have gained independence and autonomy in managing livestock. This has also promoted collaboration and resource sharing within communities.
  • Food Security: Access to fresh milk has improved family nutrition, especially for children, reducing malnutrition.

Testimonials from beneficiaries tell stories of rebirth. Women like F. (45), a mother of four who previously worked in fields and wove carpets for a meager income, now have concrete hope for their children's educational future. Or Z., who transformed from a housewife into a milk producer, dreaming of expanding her flock and building a sustainable business. These stories are proof that a little help can generate profound change.

Challenges and Adaptations

Despite its successes, project implementation faced some significant challenges:

  • High Goat Prices: Growing demand and complications in cross-border trade caused an increase in goat prices in local markets.
  • Drought Impact: Prolonged droughts reduced fodder availability, increasing livestock maintenance costs.
  • Taliban Restrictions: Aid distribution was hindered by strict monitoring and the need for formal authorizations. The team overcame these difficulties by ensuring that provincial representatives accompanied deliveries, facilitating transit and ensuring aid reached the intended beneficiaries.

Financial Contribution

The detailed financial report regarding the specific costs of the "A Goat for an Afghan Woman" project was not included in the provided text. However, it is important to emphasize that the success of this initiative was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Costa Family Foundation and "Insieme si può..." (ISP), demonstrating an ongoing commitment to improving the living conditions of vulnerable populations.

The "A Goat for an Afghan Woman" project is a shining example of how, through targeted interventions and a deep understanding of the local context, it's possible not only to alleviate poverty but also to build paths toward self-sufficiency and dignity. The Costa Family Foundation continues to believe in these "seeds of hope" that transform lives.
