Building Knowledge
Uganda
At Kasimeri Primary School in Moroto, Uganda, safe classrooms and sufficient water are both missing. We are building both — and training students to take care of them.
The context
Kasimeri Primary School is one of the most attended schools in the Moroto district, in Karamoja: nearly 2,000 students, results among the best in the district, and structures that can no longer hold. Some classrooms are dilapidated, with roofs that fail during the rains and materials no longer compliant with national standards. One of them still houses third grade.
On top of this, water is scarce: the existing collection systems are not enough for such a large school population, and two of them no longer work.
What we are doing
The project, implemented together with ISP in Africa, works on two fronts.
Classrooms. We demolish the unsafe building and construct a new block of three classrooms compliant with national standards. We also complete an existing building that was left unfinished for administrative reasons — two classrooms and two offices. In total, five new spaces to study safely, with desks, furniture and teaching materials.
Water. We install a new 10,000-litre tank and rehabilitate two existing systems. We add six handwashing stations at strategic points around the school. And we train students and teachers on hygiene, responsible water use and menstrual hygiene — because structures last when people know how to use and care for them.
The numbers
1,879 direct student beneficiaries · 42 teachers · 5 new classrooms · 30,000 litres of additional water capacity · total cost €91,424 · contribution from the Autonomous Region of Trentino Alto Adige €82,282 · contribution from Casa Costa Foundation ETS €9,142
Why we do it
A school that works — with safe classrooms, available water, guaranteed hygiene — is not a privilege. It is the minimum condition for a child to be able to learn.
Casa Costa Foundation ETS is present at Kasimeri also through the male dormitory reconstruction project. Costruiamo Sapere is the next step: same school, same community, same long-term commitment.
